SEO for Business Owners - An Interview With SEO Expert Sean Work

December 8, 2021

As a business owner, you’ve probably heard the term SEO, short for search engine optimization. But what is SEO and how does it work? Why should you care about it when it comes to your website and online presence? I sat down with SEO expert Sean Work, of Judicious Inc. to get some answers. Read on to learn about the importance of SEO for business owners, common SEO mistakes, and one thing you can do right now to improve the SEO of your website.

EG: What is SEO and why should business owners care about it?

SW: SEO (Search Engine Optimization) is just a part of marketing. It’s about getting seen in the way you want to be seen in search results. This means making sure your website is indexable and accessible to search engines (which are really just robots). Also making sure your brand, your messaging, and the value of your product or service is clearly communicated and that you show up the way you want to show up. I like to think of it as billboards on the highway. Potential customers are driving along - you want your billboards to get noticed and you want to make sure they say the right thing. SEO helps you do that.

EG: What are some common mistakes you see businesses make when it comes to SEO and online brand presence?

SW: So, there’s a couple common mistakes I see. The first one is that the homepage title tag just says “home”, which tells me that the website hasn’t been optimized for SEO. Another common one is that the website isn’t secure.

Then there’s the written content. People simply don’t have enough written content, or they have content, but haven’t done any keyword research to optimize their content with the right keywords. They are just guessing what keywords people are searching for, instead of doing the research and finding the facts. A great free SEO keyword research tool for business owners is Ubersuggest.

EG: What is one thing that a business owner could do right now to improve the SEO of their website?

SW: One simple thing is to create individual service or product pages on your website. Many people just have one “Services” page on their website where they have all their different products or services listed together. Creating individual pages for each product or service with written content is great for SEO.

EG: What do you love most about what you do?

SW: It’s a win-win. My clients keep me sharp. The more I do, the better I become at my craft.

kind words from happy clients

“Emily’s content marketing and writing skill helped me express the core of our philosophy and why we are in business. She wrote detailed bios for myself and staff members that caught the attention of prospective clients, and clear, concise content that communicates our vision, mission, and values. I have quite a few clients who have stated that they scheduled an appointment with me because of what they learned about me and our firm through my website. My investment in this process with Emily continues to pay dividends year after year.”
— Jacob Burrill, Burrill CPA, Tax & Accounting
“Emily’s been an outstanding contributor to West Hawaii Today. Her profile pieces on business professionals help us cover the commercial movers and shakers on the island, but more than that, they tell the stories behind the people in such a clear, enjoyable way that they resonate with people regardless if they’re business professionals or not. She’s a storyteller, through and through, writing smoothly, wonderfully and efficiently, a skillset that’s incredibly hard to find in the freelance world.”
— Tom Hasslinger, Editor, West Hawaii Today
“We love working on web site designs for clients who have hired Emily as their copywriter. She is fast, professional, easy to communicate with, and is a master of the written word. She makes our work so much easier, and the end product we create shines in a way that sets it apart from projects that don’t use her services. I would strongly recommend hiring Emily to write the copy for your next web project! ”
— Beth Hood, Owner, Websites With Aloha
“Emily is such a terrific writer! As much as I enjoy reading her articles in the newspaper I’m even more impressed with the blogs she’s written for our clients. She thoroughly researches the topic, interviews the principals to get detailed background information, and then comes up with an angle that’s interesting and engaging. She’s a solid pro and really great to work with. I recommend her completely!”
— Alex Mitchell, Owner, Alex Mitchell Consulting
“M writes a monthly blog for my coaching business. I’m super impressed with her ability to ‘get’ my voice and sense of humor. She takes my ‘Lynnisms’ and babble and creates a fun, polished post I’m excited to read and share with my clients. I can’t recommend her enough. ”
— Lynn Howard, Lynn Howard Coaching
“M’s colorful piece on me and my scholarship gave me the final push of publicity I needed. Within hours of publishing online, I received four sponsor partnerships. It was clear that her article was directly correlated with my scholarship gaining brand recognition. ”
— David Wild, Teacher, Founder of the 'Go Wild' Scholarship
“M has the unique ability to make her clients feel comfortable and at ease. From the moment she walked in she felt like an old friend just catching up. ”
